A water softener is a device that removes excessive amounts of minerals (calcium and magnesium) from hard water.

In homes, hard water can cause clogging in the pipe due to minerals present in the water that create scale and deposit. An ion exchange process can replace these minerals (sodium and potassium) with softer alternatives (water softeners). A positively charged ion, such as iron (which can cause stains), will also be attracted and retained by the machine.
